Jet Engine Insights

Looking into the sky we see the blue sky, clouds, birds and the most special thing the airplane. From ancient times there had been a lots of inventions and inventions went through a lot of modifications and got updated. Such an amazing modification came into the aeronautical world propeller engines got replaced by the mighty jet engines. We will have a brief study on the modern day jet engines, let’s begin then,

Most jet propelled air planes uses a turbo fan design. The turbofan is a high tech propeller which is housed inside a duct known as the diffuser which is driven by a gas generator.






Now let’s discuss about the core of a jet engine which is the gas generator that creates the high pressure gas to power the turbine.

The setup at the core part are:

  • Compressor
  • Combustor
  • Turbine section

Compressed air makes the powerful combustion reaction according to the size of the engine where compression happens in stages that force in coming air into the narrow chamber.




A single compressor stage comprises of the spinning rotor paired with ring of stationary rotor vanes which are attached to the core casing. The rotor blades gets in the air force it to flow through the compressor and stator vanes slows down the momentum of the flowing air in exchange of increasing air pressure.

The compressor have four low pressure stages and

ten high pressure stages.



Air is mixed with the with fuel and ignited passing through the combustor section of the core part of the jet engine resulting burning of super high powered gas.


Compressed air entering the inlet nozzles where each nozzle is coupled with a fuel injector which is mainly design to swirl in the incoming evenly mixture of air and fuel. Than the coupled igniter plugs ignites the mixture where the reaction spread evenly around the ring. Once the combustion gets started it keeps continuing until the supply is stopped.



Turbines are at the rear end of the jet engine which are powered by exhaust gases after exiting the combustor. Most of the turbine power is used to turn the fan while some air from the air is diverted for cooling and special coatings are used to keep the temperature down.


Fans & Exhaust:

Modern winged turbofans where only a fraction of airs enter the core which is the gas generator and the resulting power turns the designed fan. In fact the fan is the high tech propeller inside of the duct which is the diffuser. Air that does not enter the generator is called the bypass air. High bypass air are designed to move the large qualities of air at slower flowing speed ranging at 310-620 rpm.



The high bypass engine can be very large compared to core size. For example: Commercial airlines, military transport aircrafts. Exhaust velocity is a major factor in jet engine noise. High bypass engine surrounds fast moving core with large qualities of slower moving by for quitter operation.

The exhaust cone at the end is shaped to mix and accelerate exhaust streams besides it also covers the sensitive engine parts.
